What a wonderful post! Three cheers for you! I love this statement "But if we accept that we’re going to be a few years behind every new tool and innovation that comes out, we’re only going to become more and more irrelevant." Could it ever be more true than now? I believe that lots of librarians are rebelling against the technology age and resisting, however many, like you mention are trying to push forward. Until this new generation of librarians enter into management positions, however, we nextgen librarians can only do so much. That is, unless you have a wicked awesome supervisor who is open to change :)

Congratulations!! I knew you would land a kickin' job by graduation. :)

Did Linnea put you in touch with Beth Hoppe? She worked out at Whitman for a year or so after she finished up at GSLIS. Let me know if not, and I can Facebook-introduce you two.

Hi Laura - A good friend and 2008 grad of the Simmons MLS program told me about you.

In response to my town's funding crisis, I began publishing short pieces on library advocacy using the pseudonym The Radical Patron. Thought you might be interested.

A recent post shares an idea for increasing the relevancy and integration of libraries in our local communities: http://www.radicalpatron.com/my-town-electionlibraryschool-dream/

This week I'm publishing serial posts, and here's an advance look at the entire article: http://www.radicalpatron.com/funding-what-we-value/.

And on a lighter note, you might enjoy: http://www.radicalpatron.com/no-spaces-and-yes-spaces/

Cheers,

You are certainly not the only one to feel like you're doing the same assignments over and over (or, worse, to not even see the point of a particular assignment) or to feel like the really exciting stuff that's happening is not making it into the classroom. It's hard to pin it down to how much of it is the instructor vs how much is institutional pressures.

And I agree about the admissions policies. While I'm glad that I got in, and I'm not sure I would have if their policies were more stringent, I still used to wonder sometimes. It's a master's program in graduate school, but at the same time it sometimes felt like admissions-wise, it was treated more like a certificate program.

Thanks for blogging about this. It was my favorite session of ASIS&T2008. I, too, wish that Cathy Marshall had had more time. Must see if she has slides...

As a follow-up to Jeff's comment, I do actually encourage librarians to spread out their "slamming" activities so that we become ubiquitous on the boards. Still, the 10th does help get people involved who wouldn't otherwise do it.

There are some strategies for finding more "good" questions. I use google alerts to be updated on questions concerning my town/local area. You also can scan various categories of interest and start to get a "feel" for where you'll find more fact-based questions.

Thanks for the thoughtful comments! Just to clear up one thing that I obviously was not clear about in the session... the Slam the Boards effort is on the 10th of every month, but that's just a way to focus attention. One thing I found in my evaluation (flawed though it was), was that most participation by librarians in Yahoo Answers was actually on *other* days of months... most here being over 90%.
